Bandelier first published this work in 1890, hoping to reach the generalpublic with the facts he had uncovered (literally) about the Indians of theFour Corners area.As a scientist, he was thorough and certainly theauthority on the ancient Pueblos. As a writer, he wasmore an historianthan a story teller.Nevertheless, you will gain a lasting and factuallyaccurate impression of "the way it really was" if you canoverlook his stereotypedcomments and presumptuous views.Considering theMesa Verde fires of 2000 (which uncovered several hundred new Anasazisites) this book rekindles interest in the ancient mysteries of the cliffdwellers. It is easy to see Bandelier's Queres Indians as the Anasazi, andderive a relationship between his Koshare (Delight Makers) and the ongoingaffection that modern man holds for Kokopelli. As tedious as some of thereading may be, finishing the book will leave you with a feeling ofaccomplishment; and you may even retain some words from the language of thetimes.

Product Description:
This story is the result of eight years spent in ethnological and archaological study among the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. The first chapters were written more than six years ago at the Pueblo of Cochiti. The greater part was composed in 1885 at Santa Fe after I had bestowed upon the Tehuas the same interest and attention I had previously paid to their neighbours the Queres.
